Lugares de interés por sus conocimientos y usos tradicionales de la geodiversidad de Aledo ( Murcia ). El Estrecho de la Agualeja
The Estrecho de la Agualeja (Aledo, Murcia) is a geological site of high heritage and ethnographic value, where remarkable geodiversity converges with a rich legacy of traditional knowledge and uses. This Master’s Thesis aims to develop a technical record as a Place of Interest for its Traditional Knowledge and Uses of Geodiversity (LICUTG), in accordance with Law 42/2007 on Natural Heritage and Biodiversity and its implementation through Royal Decree 556/2011, which mandates the inventory of such knowledge. Through this work, the Estrecho is presented as a strong candidate for designation as a Natural Monument in the Region of Murcia, following precedents such

as the Salto del Usero. The thesis documents, through literature review, oral interviews, and fieldwork, the geological significance of the site, carved into Tortonian rocks (Upper Miocene), and its traditional human uses: water collection galleries with vertical shafts, irrigation canals, basins, dry-stone walls, mines, agricultural terraces, and a collective water management system (“tandas”). The landscape and its social symbolism are reflected in traditions such as the Santiago festivities and the testimonies of people who once lived there. This proposal integrates the scientific, cultural, educational, and touristic value of the site, which is currently affected by environmental impacts and lacks effective legal protection. This Master’s Thesis proposes the Estrecho de la Agualeja as the first LICUTG in the municipality of Aledo, launching a local inventory model to promote the legal protection of this site and its formal nomination as a Natural Monument.
