C2-2 ValiDE Teaching Unit: Diversity (English)
This teaching unit was developed as part of the ValiDE Exchange Program 2023 by student teachers from Germany, Norway, and Poland. It introduces students in grades 3 and 4 to the concept of diversity in an age-appropriate, engaging way.
Through group work, guided questions, and digital storytelling, students explore cultural habits, traditions, and values—both their own and those of their classmates. The unit fosters mutual respect and curiosity by encouraging students to create and record their own podcast episodes based on peer interviews. The process supports not only intercultural learning but also communication, cooperation, and basic media literacy.
Target Groups:
• Primary school students (grades 3–4)
• Student teachers (as a good-practice example for diversity education in primary education)
Materials provided:
• Instructional Units (available in English and German) : Teacher’s guide with didactic notes, learning objectives, competence references, and curriculum links (Germany, Poland, Norway)
• Presentation (in English): introduces structure, tasks, and timetable
• Question cards (in English): used for interviews and inspiration
Use in Higher Education:
This unit can be used in teacher education as a best-practice example for diversity-sensitive teaching, project-based learning, and the integration of digital media into primary classrooms. It highlights how to foster intercultural dialogue using creative and collaborative methods.
